Dear friends and colleagues,

The Belgian Brain Council organizes biennially a two days meeting, the Belgian Brain Congress. Such meeting is exceptional thanks to its large multidisciplinarity and gathers neurobiologists, clinicians, paramedics, patients and their representatives as well as the pharmaceutical industry to discuss and receive cutting-edge information on topics related to brain disorders and dysfunctions at large.

This year's edition is also innovative in that, for the first time the BBC, has joined forces with another society, the Belgian Pain Society, focusing the 1st day on Pain and Headaches. The clinical, neurobiological, psycho-social, imaging and management features of pain disorders will be discussed. Another major topic on the 1st day will be addictions which are also addressed in a multidisciplinary way. During the 2nd day, the immune disorders of the nervous system with special focuses on multiple sclerosis and stroke risk in women and brain-computer interface will be addressed. As usual, plenary sessions will alternate with smaller interactive workshops and a poster session at which a jury will allocate poster prizes. There will be ample time for discussion, including for patients' representatives who will in addition be present at the booths of their respective associations.

The meeting has gained support from the decision makers as the opening ceremony will be enlightened by the Belgian Minister for Social Affairs Laurette Onkelinx, the European commissioner for Health & Consumers John Dalli and Michel Goldman, CEO of IMI (Innovative Medicines Initiative).

The venue, the MCE Congress Centre, is centrally located in Brussels and offers for accompanying persons ample opportunity to visit local cultural exhibitions such as the Horta Museum, but also to do shopping.

Finally, in line with the commitment of the Belgian Brain Council for a more efficient spending of public and private money for research on the brain and its disorders, we have decided to keep our meeting lowcost and as ecological as possible, refraining from unnecessary expenses. You may thus miss some of the glamour of previous editions, but discover an appealing scientific programme with expert international and national speakers and moderators. The International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine is organized by the department of Intensive Care Emergency Medicine of Erasme Hospital, Free University of Brussels, in association with the Belgian Society of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (SIZ). The meeting is held every year in March, in Brussels.
Started in 1980, this meeting has become established as one of the largest in its field, now attracting more than 5180 participants from countries world-wide.

The objectives of this four day symposium are to provide participants with an up to date review of the most recent, clinically relevant developments in research, therapy, and management of the critically ill.
The meeting is open to all physicians, nurses and other health professionals with an interest in critical care or emergency medicine.
